Paskay

Welcome to Paskay. In the native language of the Peruvian Andes, paskay means to untangle

My goal is to help you free yourself from psychological and emotional strain. Whether you are seeking assistance for a particular problem, during a major life transition, or wish to become more accepting of yourself, I am here to help. The assistance of a skilled and caring mental health professional can have many benefits. While these benefits vary from person to person, just beginning the process can help ease some of the isolation you feel when confronted with difficulties. I hope you become inspired to take the next step in your journey so that the world can benefit from what you have to offer.

About Me

My lifelong desire to understand myself and the world around me led me to pursue a degree in psychology. I then went on to pursue a degree in clinical social work driven by my thirst for social justice. My name is Luciana Yábar and I am a Spanish and English-speaking mental health professional. I was born and raised in Peru and spent most of my adult life in the United States. I now live in the Netherlands since 2019.

The following education, training and work experience have shaped me:

  •  St. Hope Foundation Health Center: I had the opportunity to work in a diverse medical team of social workers, nurses, doctors, and pharmacists serving one of the most marginalized populations – people living with HIV. My job was to conduct biopsychosocial assessments and screening for substance abuse and mental health issues. I also provided emotional support and guidance to patients in order to reduce stress from the economic and social impact of their diagnosis.
  • Texas Children’s Hospital: here is where I developed my clinical skills working with employees of the hospital. I worked as a therapist assisting people dealing with stress, anxiety, depression, and trauma. I also helped co-facilitate crisis intervention groups for employees who were going through distressing situations while at work, enabling them to cope and continue to effectively maintain their responsibilities.
  • Latin American Foundation of Social Action: I was part of the behavioral health team helping people mandated by the court to complete the substance abuse out-patient program. I provided counseling and psychoeducation about the physical, psychological, and social impact of alcohol. Also, I co-facilitated anger management support groups.
  • YMCA’s Trafficked Persons Assistance Program: this was one of the hardest things I have done in my career. My job was to interview human trafficking survivors to determine the efficacy of the services they were receiving post escaping or being rescued by the authorities.

Narrative
Therapy

Throughout life, our experiences become our personal stories. We give these stories meaning, which helps shape our identity. Unfortunately, sometimes some of our negative experiences become our dominant story, influencing how we see ourselves and the world. NT allows us to externalize our problems rather than internalize them, while relying on our own skills to modify unwanted or unhealthy behaviors.

Cognitive-behavioral Therapy

The main thing blocking us from truly knowing ourselves are our beliefs about ourselves and others. Beliefs and assumptions that we have learned from our family, society, and culture. We hold onto these beliefs and accept them as truth, even when they cause us great pain. CBT guides us to question and challenge our faulty beliefs.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Carrying fond memories from the past and thinking of a prosperous future is normal. However, certain experiences can lead to rumination and obsession. Thinking over and over what we could have done differently or remembering again and again our moments of failure. This robs us from being present in the here and now. ACT helps us turning down the internal chatter, accepting the things we can not change, and committing to take action to improve our lives based on what we can control.
